Polyethylene (PE) is the most commonly used of all commodity thermoplastics. There are three primary commercial PE products – high density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low density PE (LLDPE) and low density PE (LDPE). In packaging as the biggest PE market, HDPE is typically used to produce rigid packaging while LLDPE is used to make flexible packaging. In terms of volume, HDPE is the third-largest commodity plastic material in the world, after polyvinyl chloride and polypropylene. Share of HDPE, LLDPE and LDPE in polyethylene demand market is 45%, 33% and 22% respectively.
